Australia has produced many iconic sweets over the years, but few have achieved the legendary status of the Violet Crumble. With its crunchy honeycomb centre coated in chocolate and the unforgettable slogan “It’s the way it shatters that matters,” Violet Crumble has been part of Australian lolly culture for more than a century.
When Australians think of classic chocolate bars, Violet Crumble is always near the top of the list. Famous for its crunchy honeycomb centre and chocolate coating, the iconic treat has been enjoyed by generations since it first appeared in 1913.
Violet Crumble was created by Abel Hoadley, founder of Hoadley’s Chocolates in Melbourne. Before entering the confectionery world, Hoadley operated a successful jam and preserves business during the late 1800s. In 1913, he launched what would become one of Australia’s first mass-produced chocolate bars.
The name “Violet Crumble” is believed to have been inspired by purple packaging and violet flowers, which were favourites of Hoadley’s wife. The bar quickly became popular thanks to its unique honeycomb centre that shattered into crunchy pieces when bitten. Unlike many chocolate bars of the era, Violet Crumble delivered a completely different texture and eating experience.
One of the biggest reasons for Violet Crumble’s lasting success was its memorable advertising. The famous slogan “It’s the way it shatters that matters” became deeply embedded in Australian pop culture and helped distinguish the bar from competitors.
The crunchy honeycomb centre was carefully designed to create the signature brittle texture that fans still love today. Over the decades, Violet Crumble became a lunchbox favourite and a staple at milk bars, corner shops and supermarkets across the country.
Ownership Changes Through the Years
Like many famous confectionery brands, Violet Crumble changed ownership several times during its history. Hoadley’s Chocolates was acquired by Rowntree in the 1970s and later became part of Nestlé after the global takeover of Rowntree in 1989.
Although the product remained popular, many Australians felt the iconic brand had lost some of its local identity during the multinational ownership years. Nestlé stopped producing Violet Crumble bars in 2018 after selling the brand to Australian confectionery company Robern Menz in January 2018. Production was transferred from Nestlé’s Campbellfield factory in Melbourne to Robern Menz’s factory in Adelaide over the following months, with Robern Menz officially restarting production later in 2018 but production was delayed for a few more years.
The return was widely celebrated by nostalgic Australians who were excited to see the classic chocolate bar back in local hands. Production moved to Adelaide, where Robern Menz invested heavily in manufacturing and preserving the traditional recipe and texture that made Violet Crumble famous.
For many Australians, Violet Crumble is more than just a chocolate bar — it’s a reminder of childhood trips to the corner store, school lunch treats and classic Australian advertising. Its unmistakable crunch and retro appeal continue to attract both long-time fans and younger generations discovering the bar for the first time.
Today, Violet Crumble remains one of Australia’s most recognised confectionery brands and is still proudly enjoyed across the country.
If you are craving the classic honeycomb crunch of Violet Crumble bars, they are available online from Goody Goody Gum Drops, Australia’s one-stop online lolly shop. Along with Violet Crumble, the store stocks a huge range of chocolates, retro sweets, boiled lollies, gummies and other classic Australian confectionery favourites.
