Old-fashioned retro lollies from your school days.

Remember those sugary, brightly coloured treasures that made your taste buds sing and your heart do a little happy dance? We're talking about the lollies of your childhood, the kind that evoke instant nostalgia and transport you back to simpler times. Here at Goody Goody Gum Drops, we're big fans of a good trip down memory lane, especially when it involves delicious treats. Our extensive "A Short History of Australian Lollies" blog post delved deep into the origins of some of our most beloved confectionery, and today, we're bringing those memories flooding back with a celebration of classic fun lollies! Get ready to unwrap some serious nostalgia as we explore the wonderful world of retro lollies.

The Sweet Evolution of Australian Lollies.

Australia has a rich and fascinating history when it comes to sweets. From the early days of corner stores stocking imported treats to the rise of local manufacturers creating iconic Australian brands, our love affair with lollies has been a long and flavourful one. As we explored in our history piece, pioneers like MacRobertson (yes, the very same MacRobertson who later founded MacRobertson Chocolates) were instrumental in shaping the early confectionery landscape. Imagine a time when a simple boiled sweet or a chocolate bar was a genuine luxury! These old fashioned lollies weren't just snacks; they were experiences, often saved for special occasions or as a delightful reward.

Unwrapping Childhood Treasures: Your Favourite Retro Lollies

What lollies instantly bring you back to your schoolyard days, your birthday parties, or those treasured trips to the milk bar? We've rummaged through our memory banks and our fantastic Retro Lollies category to bring you a nostalgic hit list. Prepare for a wave of delicious recollections!

  • Freddo Frogs: Together with Caramello Koalas, these old time favourites have always been best sellers since Freddo was introduced in the 1930's.  Today Freddo is one of Cadbury's best selling products and over 90 million Freddo Frogs are eaten every year.
  • Spearmint Leaves: These chewy, spearmint-flavoured jellies have never gone out of favour. Everybody loves the fresh mint taste. Introduced in the early 1930's these tasty treats have never gone out of fashion. Now also available coated in thick dark chocolate in our Chocolate Indulgence range.
  • Red Frogs: An absolute Australian icon! These chewy, vaguely raspberry-flavoured frogs are a staple of any Australian childhood candy stash. Simple, satisfying, and undeniably fun. Green Frogs are also still available.
  • Chicos/Milk Bottles: Now called "Cheekies" Chicos are an all time favourite and Milk Bottles are still that sweet milky lolly that you remember. These were the perfect pocket money purchase, offering a satisfying chew and a burst of flavour.
  • Sherbies: The fizzy, sherbet-filled wonders that made your tongue tingle! Popping one of these in your mouth was an instant party.
  • Mates: Iconic, Australian-made hard caramels coated in Milk Chocolate. One bite will take you back to your childhood. Similar to the now discontinued Fantales and Cobbers.
  • Killer Pythons: These long, chewy, and brightly coloured snakes were a visual and textural sensation. Often shared (or fought over!), they were a real treat.
  • Minties: For a refreshing blast from the past, Minties were the go-to. That cool, minty flavour and satisfying chew brought a sense of calm and freshness. Remember the slogan? "It's moments like these that you need Minties."
  • Violet Crumble Bars: Now back again after many years, the milk chocolate bars with the distinct honeycomb crunch of a Violet Crumble bar is an unforgettable sensation.
  • Scorched Peanut Bars: It seems up to smaller confectionery companies to revive old favourites. The dearly loved Mastercraft Scorched Peanut Bar, introduced in the 1940s, also disappeared for a time but was reintroduced by Cooks Confectionery in 2019. Now available at Goody Goody Gum Drops.
